Tutoring

The Gene Elrod Success Center (GESC) offers tutoring in basic skill development in English, reading, mathematics, computer science, and accounting. For mathematics, computer science, and accounting, the primary focus is on tutoring in courses at the introductory level.  Reading and writing tutors help students with requirements for any courses from freshman through graduate level.  Call the GESC (241-9530) to determine when times are available for tutoring and to make an appointment. Writing Program (Frequently Asked Questions)

How do tutors help with writing?

  • Writing tutors help you develop and apply your skills. Specifically they help you get started, participate with you in brainstorming and other invention techniques, and help you organize your ideas and develop a plan for your paper. Once you have a draft, your tutors can answer your questions about how to revise your paper to make it more coherent and even read the draft to see if it makes sense. They can also answer questions about sentence structure, mechanics, and documentation format.

What do writing tutors not do?

  • The tutors are teachers; they are not editors. Although they are pleased to talk with you about how to revise a draft, they will not proofread, format, or edit a draft for you. A tutor cannot guess about grades for papers or explain other teachers’ grades.

What should I bring when I come for tutoring?

  • Bring a copy of the handout describing the assignment and, if possible, a draft. It will also be helpful for you to have your questions in mind (or on paper). For example, you might ask about the clarity of your thesis and the effectiveness of supporting details and transitions. You should also be prepared to talk to the tutor about your reader and what difference you expect your paper to make to him or her.

How can I get help on my paper?

  • It is usually best to call for an appointment (241-9530 or 241-9531).

Math, Accounting, and Computers

Math and accounting tutoring normally consists of 45-minute individual conferences between the student and the tutor.  Assistance with computers may be given as needed for students working in the GESC computer lab.

Additional help in math may be found on the Math Help Page.
