Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When do I have to take the GRE or the MAT?
A: A student's score on the GRE or MAT is used to determine admission. It is best to take one of these tests prior to submitting application so that the score is considered at the time other application materials are reviewed. Although a student may enroll in classes (maximum of six hours) in conditional status, if the MAT/GRE score does not meet the required score for unconditional admission, the student may not continue.
Q: What happens if I do not score high enough on the GRE or the MAT?
A: Students have the option of retaking the GRE/MAT or pass a written essay. Students may schedule to write the essay with the Department Secretary. If the essay is not passed, a referral is made to the Gene Elrod Success Center for completion of the writing tutorial program. Upon completion, the essay is rewritten. If passed, and all other application requirements are adequate, the student is unconditionally admitted.
Q: When should I meet with an advisor?
A: Each student is assigned an advisor and notified by letter. Upon receipt of the letter, the student should contact their advisor to schedule an appointment.
Q: How long will it take me to get my degree?
A: The 48-hour program may be completed between 6 and 8 semesters (including summers) depending upon the number of hours completed each semester.
Q: What is Candidacy?
A: It is an unconditional status required at least one semester prior to the anticipated semester of graduation. The student must have a 3.0 GPA, unconditionally admitted, and have completed at least 6 semester hours. At this time, a formal plan of study should be completed (Candidacy Form) with the student's advisor.
Q: Should I keep my syllabi and my books?
A: Yes. Having these documents and texts are useful references for the practicum/internship experiences and the comprehensive exam.
Q: When should I take Practicum?
A: A minimum completion of 18 hours is required; however, Practicum is typically scheduled at the end of the program. Most of the courses should be completed to provide the comprehensive knowledge base utilized in this clinical course.
Q: Am I responsible for finding my own practicum and internship site?
A: Yes. A listing of approved practicum/internship sites are provided in the Student Handbook and in the College of Education Office. The student is responsible for contacting the site to arrange placement. Contact should be made at least one semester prior to the semester Practicum is scheduled.
Q: How do I become a Licensed Professional Counselor?
A: Completing the 48-hour counseling program is the first requirement of licensure. An additional 3000 hours of supervised practice is required. Supervision must be by a Board licensed supervising counselor. Two thousand hours may be offset by completion of graduate coursework (15 semester hours per 1000 supervised hours).
