Master of Science in Education (M.S.) Traditional Fifth-Year Certification Programs for Teachers

Purpose

The purpose of the fifth-year certification program for teachers is to provide candidates who are seeking advanced certification in the same discipline/level in which they hold baccalaureate level professional educator certification, an opportunity for advanced study within their discipline.


Advanced Certification at the Masters Level

The College of Education offers the Traditional Fifth-Year Master of Science in Education Program for candidates seeking advanced certification in the same discipline/level in which they hold baccalaureate level professional educator certification.


Admission Requirements for Traditional Fifth-Year Certification Programs

Unconditional Admission to the Graduate School does not constitute unconditional admission to any professional education program (for Graduate School admissions requirements please refer to the Troy University Graduate Bulletin online or call College of Education Administrative Office at 241-9577, or call the Graduate Coordinator for the Montgomery Campus at 241-9597). In addition to the admission requirements for the Graduate School , candidates seeking admission to a traditional fifth year certification program for teachers:

Candidates are restricted to nine semester hours of graduate course work prior to admission to the Graduate Teacher Education Program (GTEP). Prior to GTEP admission traditional masters candidates are restricted to enrollment in:

Troy University College of Education students must meet all specialized accreditation requirements to be classified as graduates of specialized accredited programs..

Certification Program for Teachers

The Master of Science in Elementary Education is a 36 Semester Hour program with the following course requirements:

Common Required Core Courses: 18 SH

Educational Technology in the Curriculum (or approved technology course in the discipline) (3)

*In addition to the required core, a survey of Special Education course is required unless previously completed.

Teaching Field Courses (18 semester Hours)

Students may select 12 semester hours of advisor-approved ELE courses. Students will select an additional 6 hours of advisor-approved ELE courses or other advisor approved courses related to the profession (e.g., EDU, ECE, SPE, RED).  A candidate may not enroll in a 5000 level course if it duplicates the same course listed on an undergraduate transcript. At least nine semester hours of teaching field courses must be at the 6000 level.


Program Coordinator for Elementary Education

Dr. Dabney McKenzie is the program coordinator for the Montgomery Campus Master of Science in Elementary Education. Students are required to develop a program plan of study with the program coordinator at their earliest convenience.
