Department of Counseling and Psychology
Program Objectives

The goals of this program are to prepare graduates for future professional roles in the mental health field, and to serve the needs of persons working in the community and in counseling professions.

Program Objectives:

  1. to educate and train counseling professionals at the graduate level to meet the counseling and human development needs of a multicultural society; and
  2. to prepare graduates to meet the highest external standards set by both state and national licensing/certifying boards.

A practicum is required of all Social Services Counseling majors. A Practicum and Internship are required of all School Psychometry majors. Two (2) Practica and two (2) Internships are required of all School, Vocational Rehabilitation, Substance Abuse, and Community Counseling majors. As counseling is a specialized profession that requires the ability to relate effectively to others as well as to demonstrate academic competence, the faculty reserves the right to recommend to the program coordinator and dean regarding the exclusion of students from enrolling in the practica and internships based on criteria other than scholarship.
